JONATHAN R. ZEKO
Jonathan Zeko, Principal Attorney of ZEKOLAW, APC, has a record of success resolving hundreds of complex commercial, construction, landlord-tenant, and real estate issues and post-judgment collection disputes, and has retained a loyal following of clients for over 30 years. Jonathan graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law after completing his Music degree at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri at Kansas City where he studied classical guitar with Douglas Niedt and Modern Harmony with John Elliott.  He has practiced law in California since his admission to the State Bar in 1989 and is an A/V-rated attorney by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, ranking him at the highest level of professional excellence. He is a well-known resource to the San Diego legal community and has lectured to Members of the Bar on a variety of topics.

Vanessa Vasquez
Vanessa Vasquez is the Paralegal at ZEKOLAW, APC, and supports Jonathan Zeko in providing quality legal services to clients across all the firm’s practice areas. A key team member, Vanessa handles a wide range of responsibilities including filing court documents, contract edits and revisions, legal correspondence, scheduling and maintaining calendars, as well as billing and administrative duties. She is Jonathan’s "right hand" in preparing for hearings, trials, and meetings and maintaining communication with clients. Vanessa brings to her role an intense attention to detail, strong organization skills, and a willingness to take on whatever is necessary to get the job done.  Visitors to the ZEKOLAW office are always greeted with a smile and a positive, welcoming personality.

Vanessa has a Paralegal AS Degree from San Diego Miramar College. She began her career as a receptionist for a law firm before moving on to Legal Assistant and subsequently taking on Paralegal duties while studying for her Degree. Vanessa and Jonathan have worked together since 2012 across multiple firms. During that time, they have become a very effective and efficient team and work diligently to advocate for new and repeat clients.

Born in San Diego, Vanessa spends her free time with her husband and baby daughter.

Transactional

Assisted a startup microbrewery with its legal affairs from the inception to eventually licensing of distribution of its beers throughout the entire state of California and in some international territories.

Investigations

Investigated multiple individuals and businesses to assist clients in determining the bona fides of potential business affiliations or identifying assets for enforcement of judgment and litigation.

Commercial Litigation

Obtained a verdict for a bank on a multimillion dollar personal guarantee when the guarantors attempted to walk from the guarantees in the context of a large business dispute.

Corporate Litigation

Successfully prevented a minority shareholder from “cashing in” on a business enterprise that became very successful after the minority shareholder left the business.

Successfully challenged a lender’s attempt to recover over $1 million of attorney’s fees against the client’s company.

Obtained a full-value settlement after successfully enforcing a breach of contract claim on behalf of a business consultant in an arbitration before the American Arbitration Association.

Obtained a full-value settlement after successfully enforcing a breach of contract claim on behalf of a business consultant in an arbitration before the American Arbitration Association.

Foreclosure Litigation

Foreclosed on and over $20 million real estate secured obligation and obtained a favorable settlement on lender’s behalf.

Real Estate Litigation

Obtained immediate dismissal of lender’s case against a client by invalidating guaranty of a multi-million-dollar real estate secured loan.

Obtained judgments at trial for landlords in commercial eviction cases in which tenants failed to pay rent or asserted defects in the lease to avoid payment.

Successfully defended a multimillion-dollar claim involving multiple real estate partnerships.

Enforced a large unsecured loan between friends so that the lender obtained real estate security and then foreclosed upon that security to obtain payment in full for the client.

Commercial Collection

Obtained an emergency order from the Court of Appeals to stop collection of a $2.5 million judgment against a husband and wife after the trial court improperly ruled that the clients were liable on a personal guaranty.

Levied on the judgment debtor’s bank account a week before Christmas in order to satisfy a judgment exceeding $1 million in order to collect the client’s judgment.

Installed receivers and obtained writs of attachment to control assets in order to make them available for payment for clients’ claims during litigation.
